Ayurveda - traditional Hindu medicine, is the oldest medical system in the world.
The origins of Ayurveda date back to the period between 4000 and 6000 BC. Initially, knowledge was passed down orally, from generation to generation, in an unchanged form. It was later written down in the form of the Vedas, which are also practiced in an unaltered form of transmission. Subsequently, Vedic knowledge was systematized by scholars in the form of Samhita, which are collections and compilations of Vedic teachings from a given field of knowledge.
Ayurveda is considered the mother of medicine. Its concepts form the basis of Chinese, Arabic, and Greek medicine, as well as contemporary Western and alternative medicine - homeopathy, naturopathy, sound therapy, and aromatherapy.
Today, Ayurveda is experiencing a renaissance. The Western world is beginning to increasingly appreciate and accept the achievements of Eastern cultures. The development of science and technology supports the discoveries of Ayurvedic medicine, expanding its possibilities.
The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit words “Ayus” and “Veda”.
“Ayus” – “life”. It is understood as the simultaneous existence on the level of body, mind, senses, and soul. These four aspects maintain the flow of life force – prana. Ayus is what distinguishes living beings from inanimate objects.
“Veda” – “knowledge”. This means that this science belongs to the great collection of fourteen Vedic books written in Sanskrit.
In loose translation, Ayurveda means “knowledge of life”.
From its very definition, it follows that Ayurveda is not limited to the physical body but encompasses a comprehensive science about other aspects crucial for maintaining health.
Ayurveda, unlike other healing systems, does not rely solely on treating the symptoms of disease and administering medications. It is a philosophy of life leading to balance between body, mind, senses, and soul. This plays a huge role in the spiritual development of a person and the community in which they live.
“Ayurveda is the knowledge of life, in all its aspects, describing beneficial or harmful ways of living and how to achieve happiness.” (Caraka Sutra Sthana 1:41)
Ayurveda is a Vedic science dealing with the human organism, its nature, and health.
It is a holistic medical system that considers a person through their physical, mental, spiritual state, and senses. Each element is inseparable from the rest, in constant contact and interdependence with the others.
The detail and practicality of Ayurvedic knowledge encompass everything that can manifest in life as negative or positive in relation to food, sleep, work, and rest.
The diet, herbs, exercises, therapies, and lifestyles described in Ayurvedic texts are intended to improve mental, physical, and spiritual health. The application of these concepts in practice benefits both the individual and society as a whole.
